Our work has caught the attention of legislators, the media, child advocates and the general public.
We have educated the community on the unique issues facing children of prisoners.
One example: in 2010, the 33-member Children’s Trust Board of Directors added children of prisoners to their list of four targeted groups of children to assist in the Miami area. That’s an important accomplishment, considering that children of the incarcerated were largely an invisible at-risk population just a few years earlier.
Our Bonding Visits, as well as our staff, have been featured numerously on local TV and radio news programs, the front page of the Miami Herald, and on a National Public Radio program. Our organization also has won awards, including the much-coveted Champions for Children Award in 2010 from the Children’s Trust in Miami, for our innovative approaches to helping children.
In addition, we spoke to the United Nations’ training concerning children of incarcerated parents, and we regularly participate at the annual Children of Prisoners Europe conferences.
