  • UN Seeks Input from Children of Prisoners

    Posted on   11/28/2011  8:53 PM

Children of prisoners are mostly an invisible population across the world. Their unique troubles – anxiety, depression and delinquency - aren’t on the radar of most social services providers, school counselors, and child advocates.

Why? They have no major champions -- no big-time celebrities, musicians or pop icons to bring their plight to the public.

United Nations committee on the Rights of the Child is trying to change that.

During this month’s conference at United Nations University - MERIT at Maastricht Graduate School of Governance, Maria Herczog, of the UN committee, made a plea to hear stories of children of prisoners from all corners of the world.

When she saw a video showcasing our work in Florida and the written quotes from children of Irish prisoners, Herczog commented that she would love to get more information because her committee gets so little input from the children.

So, share your stories with us, and we’ll pass them along to the UN committee on the Rights of the Child. Tell us about the unique experiences of children you know whose parents are behind bars. Post your comments below. Just follow the instructions.
